Modeling: According to Brock and Carter, (2013) modeling proves to be an effective teaching strategy to use as a teacher as well as a paraprofessional when teaching a student with an intellectual disability.  The teaching strategy of modeling ensures that the task or information that is being taught is modeled first by the teacher before the student is expected to learn the material.

Please view the video below, which demonstrates the teaching practice of modeling for students with intellectual disabilities.

The video below demonstrates not only what a mild intellectual disability entails, but gives examples and tips of how to teach students with intellectual disabilities.

Be concrete in directions and explanations. Students with intellectual disabilities are able to follow directions to a much greater degree if there are tangible pictures and hands-on explanations to go along with verbal cues.
